Professor Sazaly Abu Bakar is a virologist and biosafety and biosecurity expert at the Tropical Infectious Diseases Research and Education Center (TIDREC) at University of Malaya, where he is the director and founding director. He is also the Director of the WHO Collaborating Center for Arbovirus Reference and Research.

He received his training in virology from the University of Texas Medical Branch, USA and has over 35 years of experience working with viruses including cytomegalovirus, herpesviruses, dengue virus, chikungunya virus, Japanese encephalitis virus, Zika virus, Nipah virus and MERS CoV.

He is the Chairperson for the committee on Laboratory Biosafety and Biosecurity Malaysia and the Institutional Biosafety and Biosecurity Committee at University Malaya. He has been involved in the training of over 500 biosafety and biosecurity practitioners from all over Malaysia. He advocates better health for poverty eradication and safe science.
